EXPERIENCE WORKING WITH THE HAWAI'I COUNTY COUNCIL: [+]
2004 - 2009: Legislative Assistant to Councilmember K. Angel Pilago
As legislative assistant to Angel Pilago, I was actively engaged in numerous discussions relating to ideas that would bring forth meaningful community-based legislation. In that role I was privileged to write the following legislation which, through Councilmember Pilago's astute professionalism and diplomacy, became law:
Banning Genetic Engineering of Kalo (taro);
Creating the "Kailua Village Business Improvement District" (which included working hand-in-hand with the community organization, County Administration and the public);
Establishing equal number of County Council meetings in East and West Hawai'i;
Creating the Leeward Planning Commission and a Windward Planning Commission;
Creating a Kuleana Tax Exemption for Hawai'i Island; and
Creating a Water Improvement District for a private 81-lot subdivision
2010 - 2012: Legislative Specialist, Legislative Research Branch
One of four legislative Specialists, staffed the West Hawai'i Civic Center LRB section, reviewed bills and resolutions for form and content, performed updates to the County Code, and provided legal research assistance and advice.
Legislative Research Specialist for the 2011 Hawai'i County Redistricting Commission, providing legal research and support at Commission meetings, organization and coordination of district-wide public hearings.
2012-2014 - Deputy County Clerk
Staff and clerk Committees and Council meetings at West Hawai'i Civic Center, read meeting agenda items, record parlimentary actions and keep accurate count of councilmember votes, and assist n parlimentary procedures and meeting logistics. Management of Legislative divisions and personnel as assigned by the County Clerk.

Through teamwork and partnership I will apply my thirty years community advocacy, legal experience and institutional knowledge of governmental processes to negotiate and address concerns of our unique rural community that will nurture our diverse cultures and island way of life. Through experience and Aloha, I will work to make Hawai'i a better place to live and grow so that future generations can experience and enjoy what we today are privileged to be a part of. In carrying out my duties:
I will advocate to maintain transparency and accountability in government;
My decisions will be guided by justness and fairness;
My "Open Door" policy welcomes everyone to share their mana'o regarding any issue and I will help to find solutions;
I will encourage community based, private sector and governmental partnerships to address social and economic needs of our rural community;
I will continue to be a grass-roots advocate for rights of the people and continue to encourage community participation in governmental processes.
